Embracing the many restrictions in-patient wards have towards sustainable efforts, we worked with Tan Tock Seng to introduce two highly implementable and scalable strategies - the reduction of paper towel waste through a concept called the Just Noticeable Difference, and the fostering of ownership amongst nurses to encourage recycling through self-drawn sustainability mascots through a series of pilot studies to gauge their impact on sustainability efforts.

Subtle reduction in Default size
Works by leveraging the psychology of "Just Noticeable Difference" which is a perceivable threshold beyond which behavioural changes would be observed. We embraced that nurses would still "spam pull" from the paper dispensers due to feelings of loss aversion and from deeply rooted habits. Instead, we worked to reduce the amount of material per pull which led to a 10% reduction in waste and 20% savings in cost.

Zoodles - DIY Sustainability Mascots
Zoodle is a sustainable framework that guides nurses to co-create and be more on board with sustainable initiatives. As such, Zoodle is also scalable to a wide range of initiatives, beyond just recycling. With Zoodle, we can double the recycling rate within inpatient wards through easily implementable measures that work to foster ownership and enhance motivation towards sustainable practices.
Zoodle stems from our observation of nurses throwing recyclables into the general waste bin, disregarding the recycling options available. This behaviour is influenced by their hectic workflow, which makes the disposal step a highly automatic action - a system 1 thinking which is driven by instinct and convenience. However, recycling is more of an intentional process - a System 2 thinking that requires more effort.
