Understanding human interactions with a chatbot poses a significant challenge, and influencing human behaviour through a chatbot is an even greater hurdle. However, the theoretical benefits of using chatbots for automating dietary reminders and tracking are compelling. In theory, chatbots offer a convenient platform for users to receive instant feedback and behavioural support, leveraging big data to identify trends and make predictions based on users' past actions. Additionally, they can seamlessly integrate into users' preferred social media applications.
Despite these potential advantages, the practical implementation of chatbots often falls short, leading to inefficiencies and perceptions of nuisance. This is often attributed to inadequate execution or poorly developed chatbots attempting to replace human roles that they are not yet capable of effectively fulfilling.
Our behavioural studies, involving 20 individuals and analyzing over 4,200 data points, have provided valuable insights. These findings have allowed us to generate guidelines for establishing effective dietary chatbots tailored specifically for youths.
